Why did you become an attorney?

I enjoyed the political science and criminal justice courses I took in college, and at that time a professor suggested I consider attending law school. I thought I would like handling jury trials and for a time after graduating from law school did do trial work. In the process of first being a law clerk and then as a young attorney, I found I enjoyed being able to help represent people trying to get Social Security or SSI benefits, and helping veterans trying to get VA disability benefits or get their VA benefit rate increased.

What made you choose your primary specialty focus of law?

For Social Security and SSI, I enjoyed helping people work through a process that for even the experienced lawyer is a detailed and complicated area of law. I liked the work I did as a law clerk handling appeals. As an attorney I enjoyed being able to go to hearings with clients and prove how their medical conditions met Social Security guidelines for benefits. Both my father and a brother served in the Air Force, so when the Veterans Administration started allowing lawyers to represent clients trying to get VA benefits, it matched well with the work I already did for Social Security clients.

What makes your law firm unique?

We are a small law firm and very attentive to clients. Our firm is unique in that we limit the work we do exclusively to handling two types of cases: VA disability claims and Social Security/SSI disability claims. So, we deal exclusively with disability eligibility and medical issues, making sure people with mental and/or physical disabilities receive the help they need to get benefits from SSA or the VA. And, all telephone calls are responded to by an attorney, so we get to know our clients personally and are always up to date on what we need to know to help our clients.

Describe your personal interest and hobbies.

I love photography. I especially like the challenge of sports photography. I have taken pictures for the Junior Varsity soccer teams at Dublin Scioto High School, and take game and tournament pictures for some of the youth teams with the Worthington Crew Junior club soccer teams. I also like inline speed skating and inline skate racing - a good way to get exercise and stay sharp mentally. I am also a certified soccer referee.

Describe your charitable activities.

Our firm does individual pro bono legal work in the community every year. I also serve on the Board of Directors as a volunteer with NOSSCR, the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives. I volunteer as a committee member with the newly formed OSBA Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee, helping address many of the legal and social problems faced by veterans. Our office provides financial help and donates time to various Central Ohio organizations including Cub Scouts, the Dublin Food Pantry and the Columbus Food Bank. I teach ongoing continuing legal education programs with several organizations and I serve on the Committee responsible for drafting examinations for lawyers seeking Board Certification as a specialist in Social Security with the National Board of Trial Advocacy.
