Why did you become an attorney?

Curiosity.  I like to ask questions, find answers and learn new things every day. You truly can never grow old if you remain mentally nimble and have a healthy skepticism mixed with optimistic wonder.

In addition, I like to help people in need of a legal voice or counsel.  Sometimes, people are treated unfairly and need a champion in pursuit of justice or need help navigating the complexities of the legal system.

What experiences (work and personal) help you to be a better attorney?

Being a father and grandfather has helped me walk in a lot of clients' shoes. Aging parents, house transactions, planning ahead and daily problems come with the solo practice of law. It helps to be analytic as well as empathetic.

I'm a former systems engineer who was responsible for up to 11 hardware or software engineers. We had to keep a newspaper publishing hard copy and online by staffing for 22 hours every day of the year. This experience taught me to how to multi-task and get projects done on time.

What made you choose your primary specialty focus of law?

I enjoy working with young families; startup companies, first-time home buyers/sellers and helping clients cope with today while planning for tomorrow.

What makes your law firm unique?

I offer after-hours, weekend consultations and even "house calls" by appointment. I have a lot of repeat business and referrals rooted in trust and local involvement for more than three decades.

Describe your ideal client.

My ideal client willingly and enthusiastically participates in the legal process.

Describe your personal interest and hobbies.

I enjoy reading history and occasional teaching. I've taught at Columbus State, once at Hondros College's Realtor program and formerly was a substitute teacher in Diocesan schools. I now tolerate computers because they used to be arduous instruments of my livelihood.

I like to sometimes target shoot or have friendly competition with clay pigeons. That's in part because I'm a former child of "the Hills," now known as Appalachia.

I also like being Pop to two young/toddler grandchildren.

Describe your charitable activities.

  • Once a week I volunteer as a reading tutor for the area's homeless children at the Dowd Center for Homeless Families.
  • I volunteer once a week serving food or washing trays/pots/pans at the nearby Holy Family Soup Kitchen in Franklinton.
  • Once a month I lead activities for residents of a Hilliard Independent and Assisted Living facility. My Sunday visits involve reading that day of worship's Biblical passages, a brief discussion, and a sharing of the Catholic Eucharist with those who attend. I usually sing Amazing Grace, a hymn most people know, but I lead the participants in seasonal songs as asked.
  • I conduct house calls and two clinics with a local branch of Legal Aid, focusing on the poor, elderly and disenfranchised.

Word-of-mouth referrals beat advertising. Client solutions are my best achievement. Regular volunteer tutoring homeless middle-schoolers, and pro-bono work for those with limited means. Do monthly ministry visits to local nursing home; enjoy older clients and what they can impart.

Typical Retainer Fees

Depends on the work. Cheaper than most.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

We offer flat-fee pricing for house negotiations/sales - cheaper by far than Realtor Commissions. I also do whole  estate plans -- Will, general power of attorney, re-deeding real estate to skip probate and health-care directives. The latter include Living Wills, Health-Care powers of Attorney and even organ donation. If clients wish, we also can discuss pre-arrangement for funeral/cremation as well as mental-health-care declarations.

There is nothing controversial about anything in the estate plan. A person's religious, personal and partner choices are theirs to be guarded by confidentiality.

I also enjoy formation and guiding business startups. I also can offer low monthly retainers to businesses that need general representation.

Fees by Hourly Rate

$250 an hour; flat fees depend on the scope of work. That billing rate is consistent with any 31-year-experienced attorney in the Central Ohio Market.
