Why did you become an attorney?

To make a difference. As an attorney we are asked to help people through some of the most difficult times of their lives. Our responsibility to our clients is great because the role that we play is great. I am proud to work in a profession that can impact the lives of regular people so significantly.

What experiences (work and personal) help you to be a better attorney?

My work in the community has helped me to not only improve my skills as an attorney, but also to become a better person. I greatly enjoy the part that I have played in the reduction of poverty and in the fight for equality, and consider those experiences to be some of the best of my life.

What made you choose your primary specialty focus of law?

I believe that my work as an attorney representing individuals allows me to have the greatest impact on society.

What makes your law firm unique?

We combine significant litigation experience with a desire to achieve justice for our clients.

Describe your ideal client.

I do not expect my clients to be “ideal clients.” All that I ask of them is that they be candid and honest with me, and that they be willing to listen to my advice and suggestions.

Describe your personal interest and hobbies.

I enjoy playing guitar, singing, reading, and a variety of outdoor and athletic activities (mountain bike riding, road bike riding, swimming, volleyball, racquet sports, etc.). I also enjoy traveling and experiencing other cultures.

Describe your charitable activities.

I serve as a board member of several charitable and social/professional organizations, including the Central Community House, American Constitution Society, Equality Ohio Equality Council, and others. I am also a member of The Harmony Project, a local chorus project whose primary objective is to assist local charitable organizations by raising money and volunteering for specific projects.

Summary of Previous Employment

Upon graduation and passage of the state bar exam in 1998, I accepted a position as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Morrow County, Ohio. I initially served the county as the prosecutor assigned to prosecute juvenile delinquency cases and represent the Morrow County Children Services Agency in cases involving abused and neglected children. I was later assigned to the adult criminal division, where I prosecuted adults charged with misdemeanors and felonies, which ranged from simple speeding violations to Aggravated Murder. In 2000, I left the prosecutor's office and accepted an associate position with The Plymale Partnership in downtown Columbus, where I represented individuals in civil matters, which included representation in bad faith actions against insurance companies and wrongful death actions. During my tenure at The Plymale Partnership, I served on the board of the Franklin County Trial Lawyers Association and was presented with the Association's Slugger Award in 2002 for my dedication and commitment to injured victims and their families. In 2003, I decided to set-out on his own and opened his own law firm, The Law Office of M. Shawn Dingus, where I continue to practice today. My practice is limited to civil, criminal and domestic relations litigation. In 2009, Shawn joined Columbus attorney Ronald Plymale to form the firm of Plymale & Dingus, where I continue to represent individuals and small businesses in civil and criminal matters. I have had the honor of representing hundreds of individuals and businesses in cases ranging from wrongful death actions to divorce and child custody matters. During this same period, I have continued to remain involved in my community by serving on numerous professional and political boards and committees, as well as volunteering for various causes. I am also a member of the First Congregational Church in downtown Columbus. I was just appointed to the Board of Trustees of Central Community House (www.cchouse.org).
