Why did you become an attorney?

The legal profession is a continually changing and evolving world, bringing new challenges and demands. I chose to become an attorney because I consider myself to be a problem-solver and an innovator as well as someone who is willing to assume new responsibilities, tackle difficult problems and creatively come up with solutions to issues using logic and clarity. My chosen profession is one that keeps me stimulated intellectually and allows me the opportunity to productively use my skills to improve the lives of my clients.

What experiences (work and personal) help you to be a better attorney?

I have been diagnosed with two primarily cancers as an adult.   My experience as a patient has had a profound effect upon how I view the attorney-client relationship and what I believe is required to achieve successful outcomes.   I strive to provide my clients with the same experience that I demand from my medical team:  a person that listens carefully; strategically thinks through problems and comes up with solutions; someone who is empathetic and non-judgmental but also can provide expertise without sugar-coating the situation.

What makes your law firm unique?

My practice is unique because I am a seasoned attorney with extensive "old school" experience but I am also quick to adopt new technologies that improve the client experience. I believe that clients are best served by flexible, creative billing agreements; keeping a low administrative overhead; and the effective use of technology.

I combine my seasoned experience with such forward-looking technologies as maintaining an office that emphasizes paperless filing, correspondence, and billing.  Recognizing that my clients lead already busy lives and to maximize effectiveness, I often utilize screen sharing and other virtual conferencing technology to meet with and prepare clients.  

Describe your ideal client.

My ideal client wants to build a trusted relationship with an advisor and advocate who listens to the client's goals and objectives and then creates a team-based strategy to achieve those results. A successful attorney-client relationship requires regular and frequent communication; diligent preparation by both the attorney and the client; and an alignment with goals and objectives. The ideal client is one who is fully invested in his or her case in terms of effort and priority.

Describe your personal interest and hobbies.

As a lifelong resident of Columbus, Ohio and as the child of a faculty member at The Ohio State University, I have been an avid and loyal supporter of Ohio State athletics since I started elementary school.   As an adult, I particularly look forward to every football season and have made an annual tradition of reuniting with childhood friends to attend away football games all over the country.

Aside from my passion for the Buckeyes, I try to spend as much time outdoors as possible--whether it's tending to my vegetable garden or landscaping; enjoying easy day hikes with friends at Central Ohio's great metro parks; or taking up new activities such as road biking.

Describe your charitable activities.

I am committed to devoting time to make my community better and making a personal investment in creating a better future.   Throughout my legal career, I have been an active participant in the pro bono project established by the Legal Aid Society of Columbus.   On a more personal level, I have faced the challenge of being diagnosed with two different primary cancers:  non-Hodgkins lymphoma and then gastric cancer.   After being diagnosed and successfully treated for lymphoma, I was recognized for my fundraising efforts on behalf of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's annual "Light the Night" campaign.   More recently, I have become a local leader in conjuction with Debbie's Dream Foundation:  Curing Stomach Cancer by lobbying congressional represenatives and senators on Capitol Hill for increased funding and research for gastric cancer.

Free Initial Consultation?

I am able to provide a complimentary initial consultation for fifteen (15) minutes for prospective new clients. These consults can be done in person at the office (preferred) or over the telephone. Initial consults are quite helpful from my perspective because it allows me to assess if the prospective client is a good fit for my practice philosophy and values. Given my experience, I have the advantage of not having to accept every single potential client that walks in the door. Ultimately, this strategy creates a win-win foundation for both parties and serves as the basis for meeting the client's needs with a successful outcome.   

Typical Retainer Fees

Given the fact that each client matter is a unique and different endeavor, I seek to maintain flexibilty and nimbleness regarding client retainers.

Fixed-Price Services and Fees

I focus my practice primarily in two areas:  bankruptcy and family law.  In matters involving consumer bankruptcy issues (e.g., Chapter 7 and 13 cases), I typically engage clients in fixed fee structures.  In matters involving family law and uncontested divorces, I am able to offer fixed fee structures for matters that do not involve extensive litigation such as uncontested divorces, dissolutions and post decree modifications which are agreed upon by the parties.

Please keep in mind, however, that every case is unique and requires a different amount of attention.   , my fixed fees will be based upon the nature and complexity of the client's matter.

 

Fees by Hourly Rate

I have been an early adopter of innovative fee agreements that includes flexible and creative billing arrangements. Many potential clients feel that the traditional hourly billing regime is intimidating because it creates the perception that attorney’s incentives (i.e., billing) are misaligned with their own interests (i.e., maintaining affordabilty).

My current hourly billing rate is $225.00. While I firmly believe that my hourly billing rate is a fair and reasonable based upon my experience, I  would also suggest that a client should not simply make his or her choice based upon who is cheaper by the hour. By striving to deliver greater value to the client, my goal is to establish and nurture valuable relationships with my clients. I want you to view me as part of your team, rather than as a cost of doing business.
